Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are among the best ways to restore your smile and tooth function when you have missing teeth. Dentures are false teeth designed to resemble your remaining natural teeth.

Dentures can replace two or more teeth or an entire dental arch. Dr. Lynch talks through your options and discusses the most appropriate solution for you.

What are the different types of dentures?

The two types of dentures are partial and complete. Partial dentures replace just one or two teeth (not necessarily next to each other). Complete dentures replace your entire dental arch.

There are also two other types when it comes to fitting the denture: conventional and immediate.

Conventional dentures

Conventional dentures are a full set of replacement teeth mounted into an artificial gum that fits over your natural gum. Conventional dentures require that Dr. Lynch removes any remaining natural teeth. It will take 1-3 months for the gums to heal from these extractions. During that time, you’ll have no teeth.

Once you heal, Dr. Lynch brings you back into the office, where you are fitted with your permanent conventional dentures.

Immediate dentures

Dr. Lynch makes immediate dentures before she removes any remaining natural teeth. She fits the immediate dentures the same day that she removes your natural teeth, so you walk out with a full smile. Once your gums have healed, Dr. Lynch will bring you back to make necessary adjustments to your immediate dentures.

Dr. Lynch works closely with you at every stage of the procedure to help you feel informed and confident.

What does getting dentures involve?

Denture fitting is a complex process that takes several weeks. Dr. Lynch takes measurements and molds of your mouth, using these molds to create models of how your final denture will look.

You might need to return to the dental office several times to try on the models so that Dr. Lynch can gauge their fit, shape, and color. Once you’re both happy, she casts the finished dentures.

At your final fitting, Dr. Lynch places the dentures, making sure that they fit well and that you feel comfortable. Your gums can feel sore while you get used to your new dentures. It’s common to experience excess salivating, chewing difficulties, and speech impairment, but these symptoms will pass.

Remember, you still need twice-yearly checkups, even with dentures. Continue scheduling these so that Dr. Lynch can monitor your dentures and keep an eye on your oral health generally.
